Women's Community Gardening Cooperative
Diender, Senegal

Thanks to a CREATE! program that was launched in 2010 in Diender, Senegal, a 36-member community gardening cooperative is now able to grow a variety of vegetables and on a year-round basis on a 2.5 acre plot of land adjacent to their village.

In this area of rural Senegal where the rainy season is a mere three months long and increasingly unreliable, and where water is scarce and expensive, local vegetable cultivation is almost unheard of and local knowledge of good cultivation practices is inadequate.  With support and training from the CREATE! team, however, the members of the Diender cooperative gardening group (most of whom are women) are learning how to grow a wide variety of vegetables, including eggplant, tomatoes, okra, lettuce, melons, and peppers —on a site formerly used for a single annual crop of millet.

Training in sustainable, irrigated agricultural practices – and access to a free and abundant source of water – have greatly improved the quality of life in Diender.  Cooperative gardening members are now not only able to grow a variety of nutritious vegetables on a year-round basis for their households, they are also able to grow vegetables for sale at local markets, providing a much needed source of household income in an area of Senegal where income generating opportunities – especially for women – are almost non-existent.
