"The Good Cookstove"
Thieneba, Senegal

Coumba Diop lives in the village of Thieneba. Before working with CREATE!’s Field Technician, Macky Ndour, to learn to construct a clay-sand improved cookstove, Coumba cooked all of her meals over an open fire. The simple act of cooking required extraordinary time, resources, and effort. “Before, I used 10 pieces of firewood to cook a meal,” she said, “now I only use two or three pieces.”

"The Good Cookstove", as many women in CREATE!'s partner villages call it, has greatly improved the lives of women and girls. Like so many, Coumba’s kitchen is less smoky now, and she spends less time gathering fuel-wood. “My food stays hot for a long time after it’s finished cooking, even after a couple of hours. Also, animals can’t spoil the meal by knocking over the pot and I’m no longer afraid of a fire breaking out in my kitchen.” By using less fuelwood, Coumba also helps slow the rate of deforestation in rural Senegal.
